Ovarian torsion is caused
by the rotation of the ovary or annexes
surrounding the ovary, which can cause
an obstruction of blood flow, venous and
lymphatic systems. This torsion is not
common, but it is rare and constitutes
approximately 3% of emergency surgery in
women.
This occurs more often in women who are
in their fertile phase of life, and 20%
of them are pregnant.
Most who suffer ovarian torsion, have an
enlarged secondary to a functional cyst
or tumor, although it can give a twisted
ovary or fallopian tube normal. The
latter is very rare and usually occurs
in women who have not yet begun
menstruating.
The patients with this problem, as
indicated by abdominal pain on one side,
acutely, accompanied by nausea and
vomiting in 50 to 70% of patients. If
the ovaries have been severely
compromised by the twist, the conduct
must be as conservative as possible, so
that should be addressed to reverse the
twist and make the removal of the cyst
only if necessary.
In addition to ovarian torsion, the
differential diagnosis of acute
abdominal pain should include: pelvic
inflammatory disease, appendicitis,
ectopic pregnancy or outside the uterus,
mesenteric adenitis, rupture or
hemorrhage of an ovarian cyst and a
tumor of ovary caused by endometriosis.
